412 Food Rescue was launched in 2015. It uses technology to connect food retailers with excess food to nonprofits and locates a volunteer force for the delivery. In just two years, 412 Food Rescue has redirected over two million pounds of food from going to landfills in the Pittsburgh area. The organization works with a substantial volunteer force – the Food Rescue Heroes – which include 300 food retailers, 375 nonprofit partners and over 2000 volunteer drivers. 412 Food Rescue efforts address food insecurity and reduce landfills. The Critical Issue Fund will support the organization’s national expansion, further develop the technology platform and establish best practices.
