Food Connect began its work in Philadelphia in 2014 by using technology and a collaborative approach helping retailers to donate surplus food while streamlining the process for delivering that food to emergency food providers. The organization bridges the gap between surplus food and hunger to reduce redundancies and allow real time collaboration to efficiently recover surplus food. Instead of recreating the wheel, Food Connect supports existing recovery systems and fills in the gaps where necessary. It aims to create a seamless donor experience, a real time collaborative effort across partners and safe and dignified meals for food-insecure populations. The Critical Issue Fund grant will provide start-up funding to scale the Food Connect’s logistics platform and technology application to increase food rescue efforts in the Philadelphia region.
